Server failure
« on: July 29, 2010, 04:31:56 PM »
Always happens on a Friday.

Things have quietened down a bit now, but it looks like I am going to be very busy for the next month or so sorting this out.
Meh.  It's supposed to be kitten time...

Could be a Dreamhost issue.

This one confused me also, which server for what?
You should look at alternative hosts if you are getting this issue regularly, I find ixwebhosting to be good value for money and reliable in most circumstances.

Still best of luck sorting it out, I have to deal with server issues almost 24/7 at work (which is where I am now and currently what I'm doing) but fortunately I have a dedicated server so I can always just use terminal services to logon and work directly on the server.

He is not talking about our server. Good luck dude, indeed it always happens on fridays.
The denial of Kitten time is just evil though :-(

Btw, if feeling blue due to server failures etc. I reccommend reading this story: "When sysadmins ruled the earth."
Free here: http://baens-universe.com/articles/when_sysadmins_ruled_the_earth

It shows it can always get worse.

Just read the story.. :>
'twas good...

And yeah, I should probably have explained a bit better... it's the server at my client's office that went down, it's used as a file server, SQL server, DNS and a domain controller.

Im in Abu Dhabi just now, finished a server deployment and VPN config, now I'm just chilling - I fly home tonight.  Everything working fine here, at least.

I get back to the UK at about 10am.  With any luck the temporary "server" i put together with one of the workstations will hold up a few days more at least, and I'll be able to just get a taxi home from the airport and sleep.  It's not impossible that they'll need me to go straight to their office from the airport, though.  If so, they'd better have some seeding coffee ready when I arrive.
