It ain't just the programmers that some people see as hyper-intelligent humanoid aliens. You have no idea how many times, whenever I tell them that I want to be an astrophysicist, people just go, " ??? ", "Oooh! What do they do?", or "Is that something to do with telling the future?"

TBH, any technical profession will get more than it's fair share of confusion, unless it's engineer-y stuff. Then people just assume you build bridges, regardless of whether you're in nuclear or astrotech or chemical or whatever.
