seedlings stuck in "black hole" out in space

These enemy seedlings seem to be stuck in a black hole or something.  They were just staying out there in space.  Then the game froze.
A little below the middle in the screenshot the enemies just kept doing figure 8's.

I've seen this happen a few times. I wonder if it would be worth simplifying some of the code here...
