I just took a Physics AS paper. One of the questions was as follows:
In the C19th, James Watt became famous for developing and improving the steam engine. He proposed that power would be measure in the units horsepower. Suggest why this was the case.
What has this to do with physics other than the word 'power'? Admittedly the preceding question involved horses, but the origin of a word is not related in any way to torque, which is what the horse question was about. Someone I spoke to afterwards told me in all seriousness that they prefaced their answer with 'Well, why not?'. Happily, the question did get one thing right: James Watt did
not invent the steam engine. Dependent upon who you ask, that was either Thomas Newcomen or Hero (the Aeolipile).
